"The past is never dead. It's not even past." William Faulkner, Requiem for a Nun.
Did you not know that hidden in Mim’s limpid well is man’s certain knowledge?
In the valley dwells Idunn, the prescient Dis of elven race, fallen from Yggdrasil. She is the youngest of Ivaldi’s elder children. She had a terrible fall, and was now forced to live far under the branches of the tree, in a land that was colder and darker than her pleasant home.
The human world seemed such an interesting place, and the people all seemed lovely. She wanted just to visit ,to see what was so interesting about humans. It was simple really, she
would use one of their names. First it was Aolmunder, which meant 'high born'. Something that reminded her of who she was. Later, when she returned, it was Adalia, then Addie. She was 'Icelandic', an immigrant in the United States of America.
Addie, which is her most current name, did not think as she grabbed every bit of humanity that she could. A home, friends, a family and a life; all of which would keep her in the world for many years. She loves every moment of it but her mind continuously goes back to the home she left behind.
...The apples were made so that when a God aged or grew ill a bite from one was needed to make them young again, until Ragnarok.
She did not have to give apples to the humans, but she did have to listen. Addie wanted to help all of them, wanted to make the world a little brighter. It was what she was used to and there was no way to shake that duty. Help them feel young, full of life. Make them feel better about the many terrible things that happened in their world.
Addie would help them until the moment she could leave, and possibly until they ended as a speices. It was who she was, her past, present and future.
How should Idunn be paraphrased? Thus: by calling her Wife of Bragi, and Keeper of the Apples; and the apples should be called Age-Elixir of the Æsir
The wife of Bragi, who she thought was left in Asgard with the other Æsir, the musician and poet, the charming and eloquent. And that was who she always sought. She looked for humans like him, songwriters, poets, musicians- and she found them. They were all alike, all made from the same thing and she hated it. She hated it, and she still loved him.
Now, she had someone completely different. She had someone she loved just as much, with the same type of passion for his work. It wouldn't surprise her if one day he became a poet or musician.
Keeper of the apples- which she still was. She was reminded of that by the chain around her neck, the tree in her yard and the foods made from it that she loved. She was reminded of that when she saw other gods and goddesses in the world. It was not something she could leave.
Her past as a goddess, and her present as a flower girl are nearly the same, proving that no matter how far she runs, she cannot escape what and who she is.
She can never leave who she was, because she can never leave herself. No matter the name, she would always be the goddess Idunn.
